Blue Lotus Extract: Water lilly

Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) has a long history of traditional use, and there is a lot of confusion surrounding “Egyptian” versus “Asian” Blue Lotus. Despite what you may see marketed online, the geographic location where the flower is grown does not automatically make one Blue Lotus superior to another. Egyptian and Asian-grown Blue Lotus are closely related and contain the same characteristic alkaloid compounds, including nuciferine. Apomorphine is another compound frequently discussed in connection with Blue Lotus, although its presence and formation in the plant is more complex than many sources suggest.

What matters most is how the flowers are grown, harvested, and handled. Light exposure, growing conditions, timing of harvest, and processing can all influence the plant's chemistry. This is why I am extremely particular about where I source my Blue Lotus flowers. I care about the quality and integrity of the actual botanical material—not simply what country is printed on a label.

A Note on Potency: Even at this high concentration, Blue Lotus is mildly psychoactive rather than strongly so — its effects are subtle and work gradually on the receptors, unlike faster, more pronounced botanicals like Kanna. Give it space to work rather than expecting an intense or immediate effect.

Store in a cool, dark place, away from direct heat and light — a pantry, cabinet, or drawer works well. Ideal storage temperature is 60–75°F (15–24°C).
Do not refrigerate or freeze. Cold storage can cause condensation inside the bottle, and freezing may degrade the delicate alkaloids that give this extract its potency. Keep the bottle tightly sealed and upright.
